Poker Lessons

In response to huge demand, we are going to be running a series of five poker lessons specially tailored to help you get the most out of your game. Each session will involve a taught component followed by a full game where you will practise what you've learnt. The lesson will be taught by poker professional Martin-Pierre Goletto-Tankel.

A psychology graduate and ex-investment banker, Martin-Pierre has spent the last year earning his living as a poker professional, playing a mixture of Texas Hold 'em Limit and No Limit Cash Games and tournaments, both online and in casinos and card rooms. He is also proficient in other poker games, including 7 Card Stud and Omaha. In that time, he has also taken groups through introductions to poker, given seminars on poker theory and coached individuals to advance their poker skills.

Each session will comprise of two distinct sections:

The first part of each evening will be a short introductory seminar, when Martin-Pierre will discuss the following topics:

1) An introduction to each of the most popular types of poker games currently being played, including Texas Hold 'em (Limit, Pot Limit and No Limit Cash and Tournament games), Omaha and Seven Card Stud. We will spend most of our time discussing and playing Texas Hold 'em, by far the most popular type of poker currently being played and the game you will almost always see when you watch poker on television.

2) An introduction to home play, including poker etiquette, setting up a home game and the differences between Bricks & Mortar and Online play.

3) Gambling concepts, including Expected Value, Pot Odds, Implied and Reverse Implied Odds, Pot Equity and Folding Equity.

4) Poker theory, including hand rankings, the power of position, strategic concepts, pre and postflop concepts, hand analysis, bluffing and semi-bluffing, controlling pot odds, varying your play in accordance with the size of your chip stack (primarily for tournament play) and playing in different types of games (loose vs tight games, full tables vs short handed play).

5) The Psychology of Poker, including playing styles and how to play against each type of player, reading the table, poker tells and varying your own playing style.

Following these introductory talks, the second part of each session will include a poker game, usually in a No Limit Texas Hold 'em Single Table Tournament structure, so that you can practise your new found skills and be coached when appropriate at the same time.
